Some People Need to Open Their Eyes

* While Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy was in Washington, DC, there were some people that showed up at her local office with signs. A majority of the demonstrators supported health care reform, while the other side could be characterized as the pro-higher insurance premium/status quo group. I know that those that who were in favor of health care reform were actual supporters of Kilroy's. Those on the pro-higher insurance premiums, tea baggers, and pro-GOP, looked like they all escaped out of the Franklin Co. GOP office or the local country club. The anti-health care reform group stance can be summed up by the comment made by a woman from the affluent suburb of Upper Arlington (Dispatch):

"I don't see anyone laying in the street dying. We provide for everyone..."

She might not see "...anyone laying in the street dying..." in front of their expensive homes or near the Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington, but people are suffering. It is too bad that these people refuse to acknowledge it.

*** Republican candidate for governor John "Lehman Brothers" Kasich, was interviewed on public radio. Kasich has become very good at avoiding answering questions because he continues to repeat his talking points in speeches and his very rare interviews. If you'd like to hear Kasich's robotic talking point responses to questions, check out WCPN's site for the audio.

Kasich went directly into his talking points as soon as he was asked, "Where are you going to cut?" In speech after speech, Kasich repeats the following words:

"give vouchers"
"get rid of the bureaucracy"
"if it is in the yellow pages- outsource it"

The reality is that Kasich is dealing with people's lives, and not pieces of paper. Even when he was in Congress, some of his colleagues thought his proposals for cuts went too far and hurt the average citizen and the poor.

> If you want to see what happens when dramatic cuts are made, check out what the new Republican governor of New Jersey is doing.

NorthJersey.com:
Educators said Tuesday that many districts would resort to teacher layoffs, bigger classes and eliminating some sports teams, arts and languages if the governor wins passage of his proposed 2011 budget, which cuts total school aid by $820 million.

Governor Christie said districts could lose formula aid worth as much as 4.99 percent of their current budgets.....

>>> Tom Moran of the Star-Ledger had this, posted at NJ.com:

N.J. Gov. 'Wrecking Ball' Christie swings budget ax,
misses tax cut for wealthy

....he stuck with his plan to cut taxes for the rich. He asked no real sacrifice from them at a time when the state needs everyone to climb out of the car and help push.

With this tax cut, he would hand out $1 billion to families who earn more than $400,000, the richest two percent.

"This is a Ronald Reagan trickle-down program," said Sen. President Steve Sweeney, a Democrat....

The Daily Record has even more on NJ Gov. Christie:

...The governor's proposed budget for 2010-11 of $28.3 billion is almost $11 billion less than it would have been without massive cuts in all departments. Some 1,300 workers will be let go come Jan. 1. And Christie has cut more than $1 billion in state aid to school districts and municipalities.

But here's the bad news. Those cuts are going to mean higher property taxes this year in most cases....

When Kasich talks about cuts but refuses to elaborate, we're left wondering how our lives would change under a Kasich administration. I think that Kasich's reluctance to explain his proposed cuts will make many Ohio voters wondering if they are willing to vote for him.

****** Republican candidate for Congress, Steve Stivers, a former lobbyist, attended a recent "meet the candidates" forum sponsored by an extreme right winger, Michael Wolfe. Here are some excerpts from Wolfe's Platform page:

“Hate speech” laws criminalize religious speech, and penalize those who hold traditional moral values.

(Is Stivers against laws that protect various minorities?)

“Hate speech” laws silence those who would speak out against certain sexual practices for health concerns.
(Does Stivers agree with this????)

No government health-care.

(Does Stivers support Wolfe's proposal to end Medicare, the SCHIP health care for children, and Medicaid?)

Despite these bizarre statements form Michael Wolfe, some of us wonder if Stivers himself believes in Wolfe's "platform." Has Stivers gone over to the far right extremists side of the political landscape? You can see more information on Stivers here. By the way, check out the pictures here and you'll wonder if Wolfe and Stivers have gone off the deep end. Why did Stivers align himself with this obvious extremist?
