Everything Buckeye

>Yesterday's Dispatch had a story about Operation Buckeye, a group that makes care packages for troops in Iraq. Here are excerpts from the Dispatch:

(Tony) Eisenhard who played defensive end on the 1996-99 Buckeyes football teams, is an Army captain serving with the 1 st Armored Division.

He became the go-to guy for Jim Caronis, a Worthington man who launched a project last year called Operation Buckeye. It puts care packages in the hands of those serving with Eisenhard or elsewhere along the 30-mile corridor separating Ramadi from Fallujah in the Sunni Triangle.

When Caronis, aided by members of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, packed 1,064 boxes and began sending them to Eisenhard in November, the captain e-mailed back: "Everyone comments on how great these packages are. I tell them to expect nothing less from the great Ohio State Buckeye fans. … Your time, efforts and donations are truly appreciated by the soldiers we are giving these packages to."

One of the troops not with Eisenhard’s unit who received a care package was Marine Cpl. Clayton Henson of Circleville, son of former OSU running back Harold "Champ" Henson.

After I wrote about Caronis’ project in Octo- ber, checks from readers began pouring in to the post-office box of Operation Buckeye.

"Over $27,000," Caronis said. "There were over 500 individuals or organizations that donated."

Dick Tressel, brother of OSU coach Jim Tressel, is honorary chairman of the project, which Caronis now wants to make a year-round venture....

....those inclined to help will send a check to Operation Buckeye, P.O. Box 1814, Westerville, Ohio 43086-1814. Area Huntington National Bank offices also are accepting donations. Anyone with space or tables he asks to e-mail him at sinoracj@yahoo.com.

"I’m getting requests for tan T-shirts, underwear and socks," Caronis said of his e-mails from the troops. "Why the hell isn’t the government providing those things? "

He knows it would be infinitely harder to get an answer to that question than to simply turn again to those who helped him buy shaving cream, foot powder, paperback books and phone cards — all the little things that don’t make it into a war zone —for the warriors he refuses to forget....

>Buckeye basketball star, Greg Oden, doesn't think he'll win an award for national player of the year. Link

>If you are an alumnus of the Ohio State University, you probably remember the Ohio Union on High Street. The building is being torn down and a new and improved student union will be built on the same site. Read about the renovation plans here.

>The Ohio State Buckeye basketball team will have something new---- ONN:

Ohio State's top-ranked basketball team will wear new jerseys next week that include a logo of Buckeyes fan
LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The logo on the Nike jerseys reflects James' name and his Cavaliers uniform number 23.
James has said he would have played for Ohio State if he didn't enter the NBA directly out of Akron's St. Vincent-St. Mary High School four years ago.
The Buckeyes will wear the formfitting jerseys, which give a tailored look, when they begin play in the Big Ten tournament....

Go Bucks!
