Bob Ney Gets A Break

We know that former Republican Rep. Bob Ney is going to prison for his crimes. However, did you know that he got special treatment?
The Intelligencer & Wheeling News-Register:

After former Congressman Bob Ney completes his 30-month sentence at the Federal Correction Institute in Morgantown he will have two years to pay a $6,000 fine, but he will not have to reimburse the government more than $65,000 for the cost of his incarceration.

According to Ney’s Judgment and Committal Order issued by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, his total criminal monetary penalties include a $6,000 fine and a $200 special assessment fee.

The order, dated Jan. 23, specifies the special assessment fee was due immediately upon sentencing, and the fine is to be paid during his two-year period of supervised release. It also states the court has determined Ney does not have the ability to pay interest, so the interest requirement on the fine was waived.

Ney, a Bellaire native, pleaded guilty in September to one court of conspiracy and one count of making false statements.

The non-binding plea agreement outlined that Ney could have been facing five years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 on each count.

It also said “the defendant also understands that the court may impose restitution as well as costs of incarceration, supervision and prosecution.’’

U.S. Department of Justice guidelines list cost of incarceration charges as $1,952.66 per month for imprisonment and $3,450 per year for supervised release probation.

Had those fees been assessed to Ney, he would have had to reimburse the government $65,479.80 in addition to the $6,200 fine....

What a deal! Guess it pays to be cozy with the Republican leadership.
Here is another view about Ney from WorldGolf.com:

Former U.S. Representative Bob Ney has moved to his new home - a jail cell in Morgantown, W.V.

Ney drunkenly careened through the House for many a year, patriotically renaming French fries and accepting damn near anything in the way of bribes for his vote. Basically, he did what everyone else was doing, he just got caught. Because of golf.

Yes, while Ney sits in the same clink as original Survivor star and fellow criminal Richard Hatch, he can replay the wonderful memories of golf excursions in Scotland. Golf excursions paid for by Jack Abramoff, and Ney's own soul.

Ney was sentenced to two-and-a-half years for the crime of selling his vote and selling out his constituents, or more technically, conspiracy and making false statements, admitting that he traded influence for golf trips, campaign donations and other gifts....

Did you catch that....Bob Ney's roomie is Richard Hatch! Hatch, who was often naked on the TV show Survivor, is in the slammer because of tax evasion. What fun!!!! Do you think they'll correspond after they've finished their terms? Will they exchange e-mails and Christmas cards? Just asking.
