Stand up for your rights!

If you are a woman living in Ohio, you've been muzzled on your reproductive rights. The next time that you go to the gynecologist imagine that besides you and your doctor, Gov. John Kasich, and the entire Ohio GOP are in the examining room. With news that Kasich allowed the wishes of the far right Republican men to dictate what birth control is available to you, we should all be angry.

Gov. John Kasich and the GOP budget will hurt women.

Toledo Blade:

Before signing a $62 billion, two-year budget into law tonight, Gov. John Kasich used his line-item veto pen to strike language seen as a barrier to progress on expanding Medicaid while talks continue on the broader expansion the governor has sought.

But he left intact all of the controversial provisions seen as restricting abortions as well as language allowing local government bodies to meet secretly behind closed doors in executive session when discussing economic incentive packages for businesses.....

....A last-minute addition that requires a doctor to performing abortions to first perform an ultrasound to detect a fetal heartbeat and then offer to let the woman seeking an abortion hear or see that heartbeat. Failure to following this procedure could lead to criminal prosecution of the doctor.

The budget also places Planned Parenthood at the end of the line when it comes to distributing Ohio’s share of federal family planning funds....

We all know what Kasich thinks of women-----

It is time for the women in this country to tell men, especially the Republican men, that we don't need their opinions about our reproductive rights. We are not their property, and we are not children.

Republican Jim DeMint appeared on Meet the Press today.

Raw Story:

Some women like being forced to have an ultrasound before receiving an abortion, according to former Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC)....

...MSNBC host Rachel Maddow pointed out that women weren’t given the opportunity to have an ultrasound, they were forced to have a medically unnecessary ultrasound by the state. She added that in many cases women were subjected to trans-vaginal ultrasounds.

“So it’s an invasive vaginal forced procedure that a woman cannot say no to by order of the state government,” Maddow continued. “And that is all right with you. I understand that. You feel that you’ve got an interest strong enough to override a woman’s desire to not have that happen to her that you can insist that it does as a legislator. But most American women I think are going to balk at that.”

The Republicans are so paternalistic toward women, and sadists. Why should any woman be forced to have any procedure because DeMint, Kasich, or any man says she must?

In case you are interested,Democrat Ed Fitzgerald, is challenging Kasich in the next election. Ed Fitzgerald believes that women have the right to make their own reproductive decisions.

Ohio GOP: Ultrasound before birth control?

Yes. The Ohio Republicans have gone over the edge---again.

Plunderbund:

This morning I reported on a last-minute amendment to Ohio’s budget that had some strange new language I hadn’t seen. In my post-Texas pre-coffee haze, I reported that it requires an ultrasound before abortion. I was wrong and I apologize.

It requires an ultrasound and 24-hour wait before birth control....

Ladies, call your elected officials and your doctors and tell them about this latest insanity from the Ohio Republicans.

The Neanderthals are at it again.

I received a robocall from "Newt Gingrich and the Conservative Presidential Coalition" (an organization that is part of the far right, anti-women, anti-equal pay, anti-workers' rights political action group). I couldn't hang up fast enough.  I wonder what the far right, holier than thou, Newt Gingrich and his ilk would have said. Needless to say, I'm not interested in their b.s.

Now that DOMA has been ruled unconstitutional, the right wing nut jobs have raised their cockeyed, far out, insane, voices yet again. Shame on anyone that is against equality.

Ohio Gov. Kasich has a history of opposing marriage equality for same sex partners. As a member of the House of Representatives, Kasich also voted to ban gay adoptions in Washington, DC. He also supports an amendment to "prevent same sex marriage." (Link)

Kasich doesn't seem to care about equality for women. Kasich's view of women and the work that they do, does not appear to encompass work outside the home. Here is a snippet from one of Kasich speeches when he appeared with Mitt Romney in Ohio.

YouTube:

In the world of most Republicans and Kasich, womenfolk have to do the laundry, scrub the floors, have babies, keep quiet, and stay out of politics. Frankly, I believe that Kasich and the GOP can flush their Neanderthal ideas down the toilet.

Call the Caterer!

The Supreme Court ruled today on DOMA and marriage in California.

HuffingtonPost:

The Defense of Marriage Act, the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states, is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday by a 5-4 vote....

Good!

Also, we have another decision from the Supreme Court--------

On Prop 8 in California, the LA Times has this:

The Supreme Court cleared the way Wednesday for same-sex marriages to resume in California as the justices, in a procedural ruling, turned away the defenders of Proposition 8.

Chief Justice John Roberts, speaking for the 5-4 majority, said the private sponsors of Prop. 8 did not have legal standing to appeal after the ballot measure was struck down by a federal judge in San Francisco......

...Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Antonin Scalia and Elena Kagan joined to form the majority....

This is great news. Congratulations to all those couples in California that will be able to marry the person they love.  For those couples who've waited for this ruling, I have one suggestion: Call the caterer!

----------------------------

A new report has more details on Republican Gov. McConnell of Virginia (aka "Governor Ultrasound"), and some alleged gifts he received.

WashingtonPost:

A prominent political donor purchased a Rolex watch for Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell, according to two people with knowledge of the gift, and the governor did not disclose it in his annual financial filings.

The $6,500 luxury watch was provided by wealthy businessman Jonnie R. Williams Sr., the people said. He is the chief executive of dietary supplement manufacturer Star Scientific and the person who paid for catering at the wedding of the governor’s daughter. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because of an ongoing federal investigation into the relationship between Williams and the McDonnell family.....

.....The Rolex, engraved with the inscription “71st Governor of Virginia,” represents the first undisclosed gift known to have been used personally by McDonnell (R) among tens of thousands of dollars of undisclosed gifts given to the governor’s family...

Wow.

Does this man speak for all Ohio women?

Once again the right wingers in Ohio are stating that health care for women isn't that important.  The latest proposal in Ohio has women's health care last in line.

Lancaster Eagle Gazette:

Ohio conservatives’ cross-hairs on Planned Parenthood in the state budget could result in some other organizations being hit.

Because the Legislature cannot legally ban grants to the healthcare and abortion provider by name, the proposed budget places all private family planning service providers at the end of the line for state grants, despite the fact those organizations do not provide abortions....

Here is the part in the Lancaster Eagle Gazette article that got my attention:

...Mike Gonadakis, president of Ohio Right to Life, said his group has worked with legislators to eliminate or minimize unintended consequences from the bill. He said it simply is an effort to show that Ohio prefers childbirth over abortion and that the money should go to where the vast majority of women get services. He said even after the changes, there will be no part of the state where women couldn’t get services....

He certainly thinks he speaks for everyone. He also has taken it upon himself to speak for women, especially poor women, about their gynecological care, cancer screenings, etc. Yes, ladies, the head of the Ohio Right to Life wants to decide for you what clinics are open and what treatments you can receive. He is not a doctor, nor an elected official, but he is obviously part of the GOP war on women in Ohio.

Don't you wish that the president of the Ohio Right to Life and the Ohio GOP would stop being so interested in our gynecological anatomy? It is disgusting, and obsessive. Women are smart enough to make their own decisions and should not be denied care. You may contact the Ohio Right to Life at  mgonidakis@ohiolife.org  ((614) 547-0099, ext. 301) and the Ohio Republican Party  info@ohiogop.org  https://www.twitter.com/OhioGOP   (614) 228-2481 .

Today I Learned.....

* Parents and students of the Springboro Schools in Ohio continue to worry about the direction of their school board. The current President of the Springboro School Board, Kelly Kohls, wants to teach creationism in the schools. Mrs. Kohls background and radical thinking was demonstrated in a YouTube video. According to her remarks in the video, Kelly Kohls supported SB 5/Issue 2, but thought that SB5/Issue 2 did not go far enough (starting at about 48 minutes).

* Huffpost has information on Goodwill's pay structure. It is shocking.

Huffpost:

Goodwill is paying some of its disabled workers just 22 cents an hour, while the charity’s executives make six figure salaries. A labor law loophole enables the practice.

Some Pennsylvania Goodwill workers who are disabled made as little as 22, 38 and 41 cents per hour in 2011, according to Labor Department documents reviewed by NBC News. That’s because a 1938 law, called the Special Wage Certificate Program, aimed at encouraging employers to hire disabled workers, allows charities and companies to get special certificates from the Department of Labor that permits them to pay disabled workers based on their abilities, with no minimum.....

...As some workers were making as little as 22 cents per hour in 2011, Goodwill International CEO Jim Gibbons made $729,000 in salary and deferred compensation. The CEOs of Goodwill franchises across the country collectively earned about $30 million, according to NBC....

How sad that some executives are getting rich off the work of the disabled.

>>> The only reason some Republicans are supporting an immigration bill is because they see the writing on the wall---- The GOP is the party for white people, who want to return to the days of poor houses, slavery, discrimination, and chastity belts.

Failing

Have you been following the failures of the Republicans in the House of Representatives?
Yesterday, in a vote on a farm bill that would have cut help to farmers and cut the SNAP program for the poor, Rep. Steve Stivers (OH-15th) voted in favor of HR 1947. Yes, folks, Stivers voted to cut food aid to the poor. Joining Steve Stivers in supporting this disastrous bill were John Boehner (OH-8), Bob Gibbs (OH-7), Bill Johnson (OH-6), David Joyce (OH-14), Bob Latta (OH-5), Jim Renacci (OH-16), Pat Tiberi (OH-12),  and Mike Turner (OH-10).

These members of the House might say that they care for all Americans but it appears that they care only about the 1%. With 16 million American children not getting adequate food, we've got to help the vulnerable, and hungry in our country. Good, healthy food helps children succeed in school, and be more productive in life. Why are so many Republicans against hungry children?

Those numbers can add up quickly.

As you can see, layoffs are still happening in the state despite Kasich's creation of the super secret JobsOhio. While corporations get money for jobs in Ohio, the public is shielded from information on any transactions.

Plunderbund has even more details on Kasich's JobsOhio and the miserable failure it is.

>>>>> Speaking of failure..........

Speaker of the House John Boehner is a failure. Boehner is bowing to the far right of the Republican Party. They've managed to try to repeal the Affordable Care Act 37 times, pass restriction abortion bills again and again, and continue to fight against jobs proposed by President Barack Obama. Can Boehner, Cantor, and Paul Ryan come up with 3 successes they've had that has improved American lives?

More Controversy

* Some members of the Springboro School Board are using politics in the hiring of teachers, allegedly.

Dayton Daily News:

The president of the Springboro Board of Education and a former board official are accused of contriving a scheme to block the hiring of a teacher because of her political stand on a past levy, the former superintendent of the district said in a new federal court filing in US District Court in Cincinnati.

Tammy Grigsby originally filed the lawsuit in September 2012. In an amended complaint filed last week, Grigsby accuses board member Kelly Kohls and former human resources director George Long of creating a scheme to hide that they didn’t want to hire her to be a math teacher in the district. The complaint asserts that Grigsby was the first choice for the job but that Kohls orchestrated a plan requiring a third round of interviews and the selection of a new candidate for the job. The motivation, the complaint alleges, was to keep Grigsby from being hired because of an earlier conflict related to her work with a parent group that advocated for levy passage.

Former Superintendent Gene Lolli, who quit the district over a difference of philosophy with the board, said he continued to push for Grigsby’s hiring until Kohls, then acting school board president, personally directed him to remove her from a list of teachers to be hired, according to the documents.....

There is that Tea Party activist, Kelly Kohls, involved in yet another controversy. Kohls, as you recall, has been pushing for teaching creationism in the Springboro Schools, despite the objections of parents and students of the district.

Parents and students should worry that some board members appear to be pushing their own religious agenda. Will future science tests look like this?

Ohio 47th in Job Creation

Gov. John Kasich's JobsOhio program is giving millions of dollars away to corporations to bring jobs to Ohio. However, Ohio's job growth has not been successful under Kasich, especially when you look at facts (not Kasich's propaganda).

Plunderbund:

Ohio ranks 47th in private sector job creation over the past month when you measure by percentage increase in new jobs (which is a fairer way to measure as it accounts for differences in population).  Today, the Pew Charitable Trusts put those numbers in this handy graphic form:
Stateline-Growing-Jobs-v4
Not only is Ohio tied for 47th, but over the past twelve months, Ohio has barely shown any job growth at all....

Here is a possible Kasich re-election campaign slogan:

We're 47th in job creation!!!!!

This must be what Kasich said that Ohio would move at the speed of business. Slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Ohio Republicans vs. Women (Again)

The Ohio Republicans are at it again! They are pushing a new abortion bill that will force doctors to tell lies to patients.

Plunderbund describes the latest Ohio Republican bill:

...As part of the Bill, for example, a doctor must tell a woman seeking an abortion that an abortion increases her risk of breast cancer.

The biggest problem: this isn’t true.  An expert panel from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) concluded that having an abortion or miscarriage does not increase a woman’s subsequent risk of developing breast cancer.

Even the Columbus Dispatch is so incredulous on this point that they did some actual journalism and fact-checked the claim in the article, writing: “The American Cancer Society says: ‘scientific research studies have not found a cause-and-effect relationship between abortion and breast cancer.’”

Obviously, Ohio Republicans aren't interested in facts.

The Zanesville Times Recorder adds this about this legislation:

A group of Ohio House Republicans introduced a bill that will force some women seeking abortions to undergo invasive ultrasounds.

Rep. Ron Hood, R-Ashville, sponsored House Bill 200 and 34 Republican co-sponsors, including Jeff McClain, R-Upper Sandusky, lent their signatures to the proposal, which also would extend waiting periods for abortions from 24 to 48 hours and make other modifications to Ohio’s “informed consent” law....

...Rep. Kristina Roegner, R-Hudson, one of only two female co-sponsors as reported by The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, did not return a call seeking comment.

Jezebel also has some interesting remarks about Ohio House Bill 200 here.

Other States Winning Awards- Not Ohio

AreaDevelopment celebrates the success of states in the area of economic development.  Unfortunately, Ohio is not among those states receiving awards.

>> Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine continues to appear on local news channel several times per week. Last night, he did a telephone interview with 10TV news. He has become a publicity hog with frequent interviews, news conferences, and press announcements.  If Mike DeWine spent more time managing his office, perhaps the "....backlog of over 2,000 untested kits...." would have been taken care of by now. It is a disgrace that DeWine continues to delay the cases of rape victims.

>> The recent Walmart ads showing actual shoppers and the amount of savings shoppers have for shopping at the mega store, still cannot convince me to shop there. I'm not interested in supporting a business that treats its employees in such a poor manner. Since Walmart refused to sign the agreement to provide safer working conditions for workers in Bangladesh, I refuse to give Walmart a penny.

****  Republican Rep. Steve Stivers (OH-15th) had a recent meeting with constituents in Clinton County.  Stivers spoke about unemployment:

...Addressing an audience of Clinton Countians whose home county has ranked among the Ohio counties with the worst unemployment rate since 2008, Stivers said there's a need to fix the unemployment system so that it "creates an off-ramp to a job and that means tying workforce development into it."

He added, "But I think after a while unemployed people should be required to, for example, get the workforce development training that they need to have the skills so that they can get jobs."

Stivers continued, "After let's say three or four months of unemployment, it's probably fair to say that they don't have the skills for the jobs that are in that marketplace. So we need to tie some responsibilities to that unemployment after a while, [and] make sure that it does help people get back to work.

You've got to wonder why Stivers didn't explain why he and his Republican pals haven't passed a jobs bill yet.  While Stivers gets his rent free office in Hilliard, he just doesn't see your unemployment as his problem.

Feeling Uneasy About JobsOhio?

* Ohio Gov. John Kasich might claim that he and his super secret JobsOhio agency have brought jobs to Ohio, but I disagree.  According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the numbers are not so great.

Here are some facts from the U.S. Bureau Labor Statistics (posted at Google Public Data)---

Gov. Ted Strickland's term of office was from January 2007 until January 2011. In January 2011, Strickland left office with 5.2932 million employed in the state.

Ohio's latest employment report (extracted from the link) has 5.3416 million Ohioans working. That means that Kasich has had a gain of only 48,400 jobs. In a story posted at MediaTrackers, it was noted that JobsOhio has spent $8 million.  Somehow spending $8 million for an increase of only 48,400 jobs seems wrong, and strange. Unfortunately, the super secret JobsOhio program will be away from the eyes of citizens and auditors. That should make you feel very uneasy.

Solved!

* Rep. Elijah Cummings has solved the IRS "scandal" that Darrell Issa is promoting.

TPM:

A self-described Republican who serves as a U.S. Internal Revenue Service manager told congressional investigators that he and a colleague initiated the additional scrutiny of conservative groups, Reuters reported.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the ranking member on the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released on Sunday an interview transcript in which the manager said that he and a subordinate scrutinized "Tea Party" and "patriot" groups that had applied for tax-exempt status.
"He is a conservative Republican working for the IRS. I think this interview and these statements go a long way toward showing that the White House was not involved in this," Cummings said during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union."

When will Boehner, Cantor, Ryan, and the rest of the Republicans start working on creating jobs instead of headlines?

Eric Cantor further displays the lack of ideas and initiative that the GOP has in his latest venture.
RedAlertPolitics:

...Today, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, (R-Va.), unveiled a new website called the “Citizen Co-sponsor Project,” a project of the Office of the House Majority Leader.

The site allows citizens to co-sponsor their preferred bills as they move through the House of Representatives by endorsing them on its homepage through their Facebook accounts.

...Cantor, who controls the bills that come to the House floor, told National Review Online that he and other members will consider the endorsements bills receive on the site when they make decisions in the House, regardless of their number....

Cantor and the Republicans are too busy avoiding work and now they want the public to suggest legislation. Republicans can't come up with bills to create jobs, lower student loan interest, repair our bridges/roads/schools, help returning vets, provide equal pay, etc. The Republican Party is out of touch and out of ideas.

*  We've just returned from a few days on the east coast. While we were there, we saw a questionable ad from the state of New Jersey that features Gov. Chris Christie. Music, and smiling faces proclaim that the state is "Stronger Than The Storm" to anyone that will listen. Christie is currently running for re-election and is shown awkwardly walking up from the beach in the ad. Christie's self-promotion in this ad, as well as the timing for the election for U.S. Senator, proves that Chris Christie is for himself.  Why is Christie in a promotional ad during an election year?  Why did Christie schedule the election for the Senate at a different time than the general election? Why is Christie willing to waste $20 million+ to hold a special election when the general election in November could have saved the state millions?

*   More questions are being raised about Gov. John Kasich's super secret JobsOhio.
Governing:

An Ohio law signed by Gov. John Kasich last week would block public oversight of state liquor store revenues that are now being funneled to a private economic development entity. But a bipartisan effort is already underway to prevent the measure from taking effect.

The new law forbids Ohio Auditor Dave Yost from auditing $100 million in wholesale liquor profits, which used to go into the state’s general fund but are now being funneled to JobsOhio, a non-profit economic development firm created by the state legislature and approved by Kasich in 2011. The legislation creating JobsOhio, which is led by a governor-appointed board and charged with attracting business to the state, allowed the entity to effectively take over the state’s liquor operations and use the $100 million in resulting profits as a major source of funding. The law does allow for an annual audit, but by a private auditor, to track the use of what was previously public money....

....The case is currently before the Ohio Supreme Court, which is considering whether the plaintiffs have standing to sue over the issue at all. The Kasich administration argues that they do not. The state is expected to file its brief in late June, after which the plaintiffs will have an opportunity to respond. If the Ohio Supreme Court decides the plaintiffs do have standing, then the lawsuit will go to trial and the plaintiffs say they are confident that the legislation passed in the last month would be overturned....

While Kasich and his cronies give away your tax money, they hide which companies get money, the amount of jobs created, and any relationship (friend, contributor, etc.) they might have with those that benefit.

Shame!

Even though a majority of Americans want immigration legislation, the Republicans in the House are moving against the wishes of the people.

HuffingtonPost:

The House voted 224-201 on Thursday to end Department of Homeland Security discretion policies that allow it to delay deportations for young, undocumented immigrants and other people deemed low-priority, effectively demanding the government force out Dreamers who came to the United States as children.

The amendment, offered by immigration hawk Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), was approved mostly along party lines. However, three Democrats -- Reps. John Barrow (D-Ga.), Nick Rahall (D-W.V.) and Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) -- supported the amendment. Six Republicans -- Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), David Nunes (R-Calif.), Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.), Jeff Denham (R-Calif.), David Valadao (R-Calif.) -- opposed it, while nine members did not vote...

--The nation has lost an important voice for gun control, public transportation, and the dangers of second hand smoke. We mourn the passing of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, Democrat of New Jersey. See NYTimes for more on Sen. Lautenberg.

> Gordon Gee has resigned as the President of the Ohio State University. Following Dr. Gee's recent comments, his outlandish expenses, and pay, it was just a matter of time.  Dr. Gee was very popular during his first time at Ohio State, but his second term had a few instances of controversy. Under his management, tuition increased, parking was sold off to a private entity, and the voices of the faculty that rose in opposition to his decisions were disregarded.  It was time for him to retire.

****  Ohio Republican, Gov. John Kasich, has successfully moved the JobsOhio program out of the eyes of the public and even those of State Auditor, David Yost. Plunderbund has the dirty details. ModernEsquire at Plunderbund has re-named JobsOhio "RobsOhio" in a recent column. I fully agree. Ohioans are getting robbed and yet the Republicans and the governor just don't want you to know which of their friends are making profits.

•••••  The Republicans and Rep. Issa just can't stop having hearings. I'm still waiting for the Republicans to come up with a jobs bill.
